Abstract

ALVAREZ, Hilda Fernandez; RIBEIRO, Maria Mazzarello Cotta  and  MENDES, Eliana Rodrigues Pereira. ME PHYNAI “RATHER NOT TO BE”: THE TRAGIC LOGIC OF SUICIDE BETWEEN DESIRE, ANXIETY AND JOUISSANCE. Reverso [online]. 2023, vol.45, n.85, pp.17-26.  Epub Nov 04, 2024. ISSN 0102-7395.  https://doi.org/10.5935/0102-7395.v45n85.02.

This paper is based on the author’s working experience of eight years in a public agency that serves communities touched by suicide. She wants to approach this tragic phenomenon interweaving three concepts - desire, anxiety and jouissance. She has a proposal to account for suicide as (a) The completion of a radical desire, sustained by a dominant death drive that fully separates the subject from the Other, escaping the enduring dialectics of alienation/separation in an attempt to go beyond jouissance; (b) A phantasmatic collapse in which the suicidal subject exits life incarnating the object cause of desire and leaving the Other in lack; and ( c) The failure of anxiety to signal and contour an action that allows the subject to continue his life.

Keywords : Suicide; Lacanian psychoanalysis; Death drive; Beyond jouissance; Failure of anxiety.
