The author presents an approach to narcissism and the ego ideal, from its initial concept to its manifestations in contemporary culture. It shows his trajectory throughout Freud’s work and Lacan’s contributions to the theme. She briefly analyzes the presence of narcissism and self-ideals in current times, showing the impacts on today’s subject, through computer technologies, exaggerated consumerism, political corruption, racism and intolerance of sexual differences. She ends by pointing out the importance of popular movements, fostered by culture itself, in facing these conflicts.
