It is difficult to deny the close association between the death drive and the repetition compulsion. However, this does not seem to apply to the accidental nature linked to these concepts, as presented in Freud’s Beyond the Pleasure Principle. This text aims to recover the importance of this accidental nature in addressing the death drive. Yet, due to the vagueness with which the dimension of accident is treated in the essay, I explore it through the concept of contingency. Thus, I suggest that the concept of the death drive should be considered in its relation to both contingency and repetition.
