Abstract

BERNARDES, Cláudio Teles de Toledo. The conquest of Zuider Zee and the insistence of jouissance. Reverso [online]. 2025, vol.47, n.89, pp.59-65.  Epub Oct 24, 2025. ISSN 0102-7395.  https://doi.org/10.5935/0102-7395.v47n89.07.

This article takes as its starting point Freud’s metaphor of the Zuider Zee, which he associates with the aphorism Wo Es war, soll Ich werden, addressing the transition from drive to cultural creation in relation to the aim of an analysis. The text demonstrates how Lacan’s interpretations of this maxim demarcate two moments in his teaching: the conceptualization of an ethics of desire in the early 1960s and the formulation of a clinic concerned with the notion of jouissance in the early 1970s. Considering these shifts, the article highlights how such rereadings point to a new perspective on the end of analysis, inviting us to take a further step regarding the clinical handling of jouissance.

Keywords : desire; jouissance; ethics; treatment conduct; end of analysis..
