This article discusses the diagnosis of autism in the extended clinic, based on the Risk Indicators for Child Development (IRDI), an instrument developed by Brazilian researchers for the care of little children. By means of six semi-structured interviews with psychoanalysts who work with the autism in health services, we ponder about the possible effects of using these indicators. We conclude that the use of this instrument needs to be taken cautiously with regard to the pathologization of the children; on the other hand, we consider it to be an interesting strategy for the work of psychoanalysts in multidisciplinary teams in an expanded context.
