CHREIM, Vanessa et al. When silence is traumatic: the unsaid and denial on family context. J. psicanal. [online]. 2023, vol.56, n.105, pp.171-186. Epub 26-Ago-2024. ISSN 0103-5835. https://doi.org/10.5935/0103-5835.v56n105.12.
In this article, we seek to reflect on the traumatic repercussions of silence on the family group due to the unsaid, the disavowals and denials, producing the silencing of the pain experienced by its members. To analyze the theme, the film It’s only the end of the world is adopted to illustrate important psychoanalytic concepts, such as the use of manic defenses to cover up losses, Heinz Kohut’s concept of narcissistic rage (1984) and the notion of denial by Sándor Ferenczi (1933/2011). Different aspects of potential traumatic family dynamics are explored to help us think about the challenges that we face on psychoanalytic practice.
