From his 39 years old experience directing graduate theses at the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo, the author argues that this kind of text participates of two different categories: it is both a psychoanalytic paper and an academic one. This has consequences on several levels, from the required logical, methodological and epistemological consistence up to rhetorical and ethical questions. To illustrate his argument, he examines closely three works he has personally directed, showing on each one how the principles he defends - and which he urges his students to abide by - lead to small but solid contributions to psychoanalytic theory and practice.
