CHERVET, Bernard. The “French model” of psychoanalytic training: genesis, principle, protocol, and foundation. J. psicanal. [online]. 2025, vol.58, n.108, pp.209-230.  Epub 11-Jul-2025. ISSN 0103-5835.  https://doi.org/10.5935/0103-5835.v58n108.15.

The birth and recognition of the French model for training new psychoanalysts unfolded over half a century. After World War II, there was an overwhelming demand for analytic treatment and psychoanalytic training. In agreement with the IPA, the Eitingon model protocol had to be adapted to this situation; hence, the implementation of a minimum of three weekly 45-minute sessions for those wishing to become analysts, as well as group supervision. The reflection on training was accompanied by a key decision: the radical separation between personal analysis and candidate training. The break with the Eitingon model rests on this principle alone. It is the fundamental institutional principle of the training. This led to the end of training analyses and the opening of the possibility of becoming an analyst to anyone who had undergone a treatment with an ipa analyst, whether or not they were a training analyst. This is known as the “all-couch” reform. Finally, the desire to promote a diversity of analysts and to rely on each candidate’s personal commitment to their training path resulted in granting each candidate considerable freedom in organizing their training program in line with their interests and capacity for identification with trainers.
