The school influences child development by enabling academic acquisitions, as well as broadening of social repertoire and interpersonal relationships. Therefore, it is essential to understand protective and risk factors that can contribute to or hinder educational development. We aimed to compare the variables of school stressors, social skills, behavior problems and school achievement in students considering gender, non-literate, and literate groups, as well as to verify associations between the variables. We used quantitative, cross-sectional approach. The participants were 73 boys and 84 girls, with an average age of 8 years and 9 months, in addition to 10 teachers. The data was collected at public schools located in a city in the outskirts of the State of São Paulo. We used the following instruments: Provinha Brasil, Inventory of School Stressors, Social Skills Inventory, Behavior Problems and Academic Competence. The results highlight that girls reached higher scores in school achievement and social skills; while boys reached higher scores on stressors and behavior problems; the non-literate group presented more stressors and the literate group more social skills; we found associations between variables. The study contributes to school-oriented interventions.
