Understanding is one of the important aspects of language. The understanding Assessment, however, is not a simple process and there are still few original instruments in the Portuguese language. Therefore, the aim of this paper is the critical literature reviews for the main instruments used to evaluate children’s comprehension of oral language in Portuguese and European languages. The search strategy included Medline, SciELO and Scopus in Brazil and Porbase and the search in associated university libraries, as well as in the catalogs of reference publishers. An analysis of the tests was carried out in relation to the types of tests carried out. The instruments found in this article were: PROC and ADL (in Brazil) and TILC, TALC, ALPE, GOL and ALO (in Portugal). The analyzes showed that there is a lack of comprehension tests in European and Brazilian Portuguese. There are few instruments available for oral language comprehension assessment. The type of assessment is similar, with standardized tests and pointing and oral answer tasks. There is a lack of assessments on non-verbal language and different discursive genres, as ‘well as assessments that involve different methodologies (check list, dynamic assessment, discursive assessment).
