Abstract

CORREIA, Luis Felipe et al. Assessment of somatic growth in children: Pedagogical Residency program. Rev. psicopedag. [online]. 2025, vol.42, n.128, pp.236-242.  Epub Sep 12, 2025. ISSN 0103-8486.  https://doi.org/10.51207/2179-4057.20250023.

Somatic growth is the period in which each individual develops bone and muscle tissue and also organs. This growth can be represented in several ways, an example being weight and height. The objective of this study was to verify somatic growth with the prevalence of Z-Score indicators of body weight, body height and body mass index (BMI) by age, and the interactions between age and sex by the variable body weight, body height and BMI. The methodology is characterized as field research, descriptive, cross-sectional, with a convenience sample, non-probabilistic and with a quantitative focus. Tools such as the Z Score and percentiles were used for evaluation. The study was conducted with 177 students aged 6 to 8 years-old, in which anthropometric measurements such as weight, height and BMI were collected. The WHO AnthroPlus program and tables from the World Health Organization were used. Statistical analysis revealed significant differences in weight and height between sexes and ages, highlighting a significant drop in girls’ BMI at 8 years-old. The importance of considering national standards for evaluating somatic growth was highlighted, with regional studies to understand the particularities of each population. It is concluded that there are variations in the somatic growth of children in Porto Velho, RO, Brazil in relation to other studies, highlighting the need to investigate the causes of these differences and establish local references for a more precise assessment. It is recommended that further research be carried out with larger samples to construct specific reference maps for the region.
