Resumen

LEFEVRE, Ana Maria Cavalcanti et al. Smoking parents: what do their children think?. Rev. bras. crescimento desenvolv. hum. [online]. 2006, vol.16, n.2, pp.53-68. ISSN 0104-1282.

The objective of this research project was to achieve a better understanding of family dynamics in smoking parents' homes. The focus is on the relationship between smoking parents and their children and the central theme is the fact that passive smoking is the third biggest cause of preventable deaths in the world. Forty-one children and 22 adults participated in the study. The methodology involved is the Discourse of the Collective Subject (in Portuguese, DSC), which depicts a quali-quantitative profile. The findings revealed that the children emphasized that smoking parents could lead the children to smoke themselves; however, they do not intend to smoke and the most frequent reason mentioned was fear of illnesses and death. A substantial part of the kids stated that the parents smoke in their presence, which they deeply dislike and resent. But parents say they try not to do it, displaying some awareness of the hazards to the passive smoker. Because the present research is an initial study, with a small sample, the conclusions cannot be generalized to all types of pre-adolescents. However, from a qualitative point of view, the results suggest a broad variety of subjects and sub-subjects to be explored in future research studies.

Palabras clave : Tobaccoism; Passive Smoker; Discourse of the Collective Subject.
