GODOY, Evandro C. Some notes on judgement in Hume. Barbaroi [online]. 2011, n.35, pp.179-188. ISSN 0104-6578.
The Scottish philosopher David Hume produced a theory about human cognitive processes that has widespread influence in contemporary, especially in the Philosophy of Mind and Epistemology. This important influence demands serious and cautious interpretations, and it burdens indeed care with the peculiar terminology of his work in order to avoid ill-grounded comparisons with other authors. Intending to contribute to clarification and qualification of the debate about the contributions of Hume, this text presents a general idea, though resumed, of his theoretical philosophy in order to make clear that: i) the relations of ideas described in the philosophy of the author are not, by itself, a theory of judgment; ii) his conception of judgment must be searched in his explanation of belief and iii) despite the remarkable influence of his predecessors (Descartes and Locke especially), his philosophy has a full detailed and original theory of judgment.
