Abstract
MAZZARI, Marcus V.. Leo Naphta and Lodovico Settembrini: ideological voices in the formation of Hans Castorp. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2022, vol.56, n.1, pp.27-43. Epub Aug 26, 2024. ISSN 0486-641X. https://doi.org/10.5935/0486-641x.v56n1.03.
This essay focuses on the ideological conflict between two characters in the novel The Magic Mountain, who dispute the ascendancy over the young Hans Castorp: the Italian Settembrini and the Jew Naphta, who after fleeing a pogrom in Eastern Europe, becomes a Jesuit and, at the same time, an ardent defender of the dictatorship of the proletariat. While the former is guided by liberal-progressive conceptions, the latter is distinguished by a radicalism that denies science and democratic values. In its closing, the essay focuses on the possible position of the novelist Thomas Mann in the ideological constellation outlined in this great novel of formation.
