Abstract

POSTIGO, Vanuza Monteiro Campos. Psychoanalysis, cruelty, and the coliseum of the digital masses. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2022, vol.56, n.1, pp.105-116.  Epub Aug 26, 2024. ISSN 0486-641X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/0486-641x.v56n1.07.

In this essay, we will explore how the new digital territory that appeared since the advent of the www is configured as a new space, where human evil and cruelty are fiercely expressed, favored by the conditions of anonymity and the remote distance that are intrinsic to it. The groupings and masses that constitute themselves in the networks form arenas of haters, composed by masses of haters, web users who gather in a virtual coliseum in which they incite to lynch, or to cancel people/institutions. These individuals, in their singularities or engaged in the viral masses that are continuously configured in the digital social networks, are governed by deadly impulses that find a place in the new virtual arena, favoring the proliferation of evil by the functioning logic of digital social networks: fast, viral, dynamic, and anonymous.

Keywords : cruelty; psychoanalysis; digital mass.
