Abstract

BRANDAO, Cibele Maria Moraes Di Battista et al. Crossing the storm: Thomas Ogden, the analyst’s mind and the group’s containment role. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2022, vol.56, n.2, pp.67-78.  Epub Aug 19, 2024. ISSN 0486-641X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/0486-641x.v56n2.06.

This work is a group reflection which resulted from the storm caused by the covid-19 pandemic. The turbulence at first brought the elective seminar The Thought of Thomas Ogden, composed by the training analyst and participants of the Brazilian Psychoanalysis Society of São Paulo, to a relative standstill. The tremendous impact devastated our daily lives in a universal way. New configurations regarding the media, such as on-line platforms, were gradually created or re-invented amid the storms. In the specific case of this group, coping was gradually stimulated in a particular way by the training analysts management and continence, by the groups motivation, and mainly by the ideas of the author Thomas Ogden, the central topic of the elective seminar. Countless chapters suggested by the training analyst kept on guiding and interlocking the groups affectional bonds between theory and technique. Each participant, in their singularity, had peculiar experiences and suffered from anxieties facing the new, due to the diversity of behavior reactions within the analytical field and in life, with the arrival of the pandemic. The objective of this paper is to show how the storm was crossed, and also to explain how the training analyst, metaphorically representing a compass, was able to, little by little, guide the group, and thus continue the seminar.

Keywords : psychoanalytic training; covid-19 pandemic; storm; standstill; crossing.
