Abstract

ANDRADE, Érico. When can forgiveness cure?. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2022, vol.56, n.2, pp.125-139.  Epub Aug 19, 2024. ISSN 0486-641X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/0486-641x.v56n2.10.

The objective of this paper is to expand Paul Ricoeur’s idea about forgiveness, taken as a work of elaboration of collective memory, and directed to the other. With this, I believe it is possible to understand forgiveness as a primary task of the psychoanalytic process of self-care. I therefore intend to address self-forgiveness. My hypothesis is that forgiveness can be understood as an activity of elaboration of guilt, when we consider that guilt is responsible for identifying certain sufferings or traumas with the ego. Thus, I intend to show, on the one hand, how certain sufferings remain repressed, as they are strongly linked to the feeling of guilt. On the other hand, I intend to show how forgiveness can be understood as a process of disidentification with the ghost of identity. This process of disidentification is carried out through the exercise of freedom.

Keywords : forgiveness; identification; freedom; suffering.
