IPA psychoanalysis maintains a tradition of rigorous training and creativity and an openness to application of psychoanalytic thinking to the urgent issues of contemporary times. By international consensus, arrived at through more than 100 years of scholarly effort and clinical practice, a tripartite approach to training has been developed. It includes personal analysis, didactic curriculum, and multiple supervised analytic cases. This intensive educational experience prepares analysts-in-training to responsibly treat the complex emotional and cognitive problems of persons in acute as well as longstanding distress. It results in deep understanding of the roots of conflict, whether social or individual. A psychoanalyst trained according to these carefully developed international standards is prepared to listen fully, tolerate strong and sometimes unbearable affect in the context of a complex therapeutic relationship, and assess a patients needs and potential for improvement and change. The increased use of new technologies to extend training and treatment services requires careful management and attention to quality control. The overwhelming advantage of in-person contact offers unique advantages that must be preserved whenever possible in both training and practice.
