MORGENSTERN, Ada and GUELLER, Adela Judith Stoppel de. Duplication, multiplication, unification: from assisted reproduction to the subjective constitution of multiple children. The proportion of multiple births has grown geometrically in contemporaneity, not because of genetic issues, but because of the intervention of medical reproductive techniques. In the impossibility of having a child, the woman agrees to undergo medical procedures that may overcome her desire to have one child, offering her the probability of a multiple pregnancy. The work of mothering more than one child simultaneously can have a high psychic cost for both parents and babies. This raises questions about the theoretical formulation of the constitution of the subject constructed under the viewpoint of the uniqueness of the phallus. Parents, fascinated and horrified with twins, not rarely find themselves in significant difficulties performing their functions and demand psychoanalytic treatment. By dismissing the sexual act and the role of man as genitor, these medical resources have also been sought by new family configurations, producers of subjectivations yet to be studied by Psychoanalysis.
Keywords : medically assisted reproduction; twins; parenting; new family configurations; phallic logic.
