TRINCA, Walter. The dimension of being in mental life. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2023, vol.57, n.1, pp.117-130. Epub 14-Out-2024. ISSN 0486-641X. https://doi.org/10.69904/0486-641x.v57n1.08.
The inner being is formed by an endogenous system that defines the primary existential reality and core center of a person’s mental life. In its unity, completeness, cohesion, and indivisibility, it is characterized as a stable and stabilizing matrix, which accounts for the unique and specific existence of a person. At the same time, it is where the somatopsychic whole and its relationships with the external world is organized and harmonized. The experience of having a being is basic and elementary, as described over time by the different forms of knowledge dealing with human inner world. Human beings have a non-sensory openness to experiences, but they also present obstacles and barriers to them, so that, on the one hand, there is contact with the inner being and, on the other, detachment from contact. Thus, the author formulates a General Model, in which this being is distinguished from the self. The latter refers to an instance over which the former may or may not exert influence and action, depending on the state of contact. The General Model comprises the interaction of several factors, in which the activities of the death drive, the effects of fragility and sensoriality on the self, among other aspects, stand out. The psychoanalyst works based on these notions, aiming to help patients to establish or reestablish contact with themselves. The consequences and implications of the Model extend to binding, aesthetic, and ethical issues, but also to the senses and meanings for life and living.
