NISHIKAWA, Eunice. Phármakon: reflections of a psychoanalyst. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2023, vol.57, n.4, pp.53-74. Epub 04-Nov-2024. ISSN 0486-641X. https://doi.org/10.69904/0486-641x.v57n4.05.
The author takes Plato’s phármakon in the dialog Phaedrus as her starting point for reflection. The duality of the term as remedy or poison serves to introduce the origin of psychoanalysis, with Freud the zoologist, investigating the gonads of eels, Freud the physiologist, studying the nerve cells of crayfish, and Freud the neurologist, focusing on hysterics. From a young age, his ability as a scientist was evident, following Darwin’s evolutionary theories, the incipient aspects of genetics and the innovative techniques of the Second Industrial Revolution. Freud’s scientific background created the foundations of psychoanalytic metapsychology for the investigation of the human soul, the psychoanalytic phármakon. In the 20th century, we see the emergence of so-called psychotropic drugs, the evolution of psychiatry and the questioning psychoanalysis. In the 21st century, we find discoveries in genetics, molecular biology and neuroscience that corroborate Freud’s early research and make it possible to broaden investigations into the mind-body relationship, making psychoanalysis an important tool in the approach to contemporary clinical practice.
