Abstract

GURFINKEL, Decio. Psychoanalysis of addictions: a brief historical overview. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2023, vol.57, n.4, pp.115-132.  Epub Nov 04, 2024. ISSN 0486-641X.  https://doi.org/10.69904/0486-641x.v57n4.09.

The author offers a brief historical overview of the psychoanalysis of addictions, with some notes on the history of the approach to the subject in Brazil. He presents a critical and up-to-date discussion on the topic: he points out transformations in the field, as well as the repercussions of the theme of addictions on developments in psychoanalysis in general, with an emphasis on the question of abstinence and the challenges of clinical management. He proposes a psychoanalytic concept of addiction, characterized by the paradox of unity in diversity. The paradox is due, on the one hand, to the recognition of the multifaceted nature of addictions in terms of their psychopathological status and, on the other, to the fact that there are regular modes of psychic functioning that are relatively common to most clinical cases.

Keywords : addictions; drug addiction; history of psychoanalysis; abstinence; psychopathology.
