CASSORLA, Roosevelt. The archaic character and the contemporary clinic: reflections based on The ego and the id. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2023, vol.57, n.4, pp.149-165.  Epub 04-Nov-2024. ISSN 0486-641X.  https://doi.org/10.69904/0486-641x.v57n4.11.

The author discusses some aspects of The ego and the id 100 years after its publication and relates them to the contemporary theory and practice of psychoanalysis. After presenting the main characteristics of contemporary psychoanalysis, he deals with aspects linked to the beginning of mental functioning, emphasizing deficits in representation, the unrepressed unconscious and the impossibility of dreaming. He then studies the archaic of character, noting that its constitution is the result of phylogenetic and transgenerational factors and primitive inscriptions. This character, specific to each individual (like a fingerprint), is the ground on which neurotic, psychotic, perverse processes and character disorders themselves will take root. The author discusses Freud’s and Green’s approaches to character, emphasizing the second topic of The ego and the id. He then shows the usefulness of this concept for understanding phenomena that manifest themselves in the analytical field through spontaneous behavior, different from thought-out actions or discharged acts. He deepens these ideas based on a clinical material in which deficient symbolization stimulates characterological behaviors that manifest themselves through collusions that defend the analytic pair from the traumatic perception of triangularity.
