The author highlights professor Nobre de Melo’s conceptualization of senescence in order to propose a psychoanalytic understanding of the normal aging process of human beings. He uses theoretical topics from Heinz Kohut’s psychology of the self and the Freudian elaborations of the ego ideal described by Janine Chasseguet-Smirgel. He also draws on books by Ingmar Bergman and Simone de Beauvoir.
