Abstract

SOUZA, Pedro Fernandez de. Notes on Freud’s notes. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2024, vol.58, n.1, pp.169-182.  Epub Nov 29, 2024. ISSN 0486-641X.  https://doi.org/10.69904/0486-641x.v58n1.13.

The subject of this article is Freud’s footnotes. Based on Gérard Genette’s concept of paratext, the author undertakes a comparative reading of some of Freud’s texts, focusing on his marginal notes. One can notice a constant textual and theoretical movement in Freud, which goes from the margins to the center. It is common for ideas first expressed in marginal notes to rise and become the specific subject of “real” texts, sometimes years apart. Thus, for example, the idea of a 1923 footnote on Dora’s case becomes the central subject of an autonomous text, from 1925, on negation. This movement does not seem casual. It seems to be, rather, a fundamental index not only of the Freudian writing, but also of his theorization, in which the difference between center and margin is repeatedly transgressed and liquefied.

Keywords : footnote; Freud; paratext; writing; theorization.
