The author presents findings in neuropsychoanalytic research related to two themes: the nature and number of the drives, which according to Freud “make demands upon the mind to perform work”; and the nature and component structures of what we call “the unconscious”, especially the way in which the repressed component of the unconscious is constituted and maintained. He proposes a review of some theoretical concepts and then discusses their implications for clinical practice.
