AHUMADA, Jorge L.. Psychoanalysis: natural science and human science. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2024, vol.58, n.2, pp.47-67. Epub 02-Dez-2024. ISSN 0486-641X. https://doi.org/10.69904/0486-641x.v58n2.04.
Is psychoanalysis a science? The controversy raised by this question revolves around whether science is one and sticks to the model of classical physics, a position generally held by positivist philosophers, logicians or hermeneuts who have not personally worked in the natural sciences; or whether the sciences are many, each one with their own methods and forms of validation, without claiming to have certainties. In this work, the author brings into the discussion a participant who is not usually invited to the debate, Albert Einstein, and then examines the epistemic differences between the exact sciences and the descriptive-observational sciences, whose model derives from Aristotle’s biology. He then considers Freud’s epistemic trajectory, from the Cartesianism of the “Project” to his final positions, and reviews Freud’s broad coincidences with the epistemic creeds of Darwin and Einstein, operating from facts to arrive at theories. Finally, he presents the challenges posed by the current era.
