In this paper, the author reflects on the importance of psychoanalytic scientific research contemplating the dimension of the imprecise. He highlights the complexity of the psychoanalytic clinic and the importance of researchers recognizing the dimensions of the imprecise, the vague and the obscure as an inherent part in their quest to apprehend the psychic processes of the internal and inter-subjective world. By formulating strategies of attention to detail, by advocating the attitude of floating attention and the technique of free association, psychoanalysis establishes the field of what is of the order of the imprecise as a zone of action for the apprehension of unconscious material.
