Abstract

VERISSIMO, Tânia Corghi. Playing with Freud: Derrida’s fort-da. Rev. bras. psicanál [online]. 2024, vol.58, n.3, pp.133-148.  Epub Mar 28, 2025. ISSN 0486-641X.  https://doi.org/10.69904/0486-641x.v58n3.11.

Through the dialogue between the readings of Freud and Derrida, the author aims to focus on the most historically discussed play by psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic theory: the game of the spool, the well-known fort-da. Derrida will be taken as an author capable of provoking psychoanalysis and psychoanalysts in their classic reading of Freudian theory, resonating new translations to the practice of our profession. We will think of his provocations as plays thrown at the classic theoretical cut of the spool scene presented in Beyond the pleasure principle. How did Freud theorize about the spool and how do we, psychoanalysts, theorize today? What is our reading of this play and how would Freud’s reading support our clinical practice? How did Derrida, a questioning reader of homogeneous patterns of understanding Freudian works, read it, after all? In what way would his translation of fort-da inflect on our practice? What to extract from the reading of both?

Keywords : fort-da; Sigmund Freud; Jacques Derrida; play; beyond the pleasure principle.
