VERAS, Renata Meira e DE MEDEIROS, Luciana Fernandes. Researching everyday social practices in the field of critical social psychology: the perspective of institutional ethnography. Estud. psicol. (Natal) [online]. 2024, vol.29, e242908. Epub 10-Nov-2025. ISSN 1413-294X. https://doi.org/10.69909/1678-4669.20240008.
Institutional Ethnography (IE) is considered by Dorothy Smith as a sociology for people and has been used as a theoretical and methodological approach in critical social psychological research. IE directs to address to the social relationships created between power structures (institutions) and the practices developed at a microsocial level that constitute everyday life (ethnography). This article aims to present the fundamental concepts of this perspective, its application in social psychological research and, finally, a critical analysis of this perspective. As social reality is constituted by different forms of contacts and interactions, IE rejects the Eurocentric pattern of methology and conceives of scientific practice as the result of complex relationships that connect the researcher with people, with things, with daily practices, with interests, with resources and with institutions.
