In this study, 146 freshmen psychology students from two universities, one public and the other private, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, respond to interviews and questionnaires about their choice of psychology as a profession. The interpretation of the reports suggests a profile of the psychology student and shows the vocational predicament of the field, characterized by the distancing between the profession and contemporary problems.
