GUAMBE, Augusto Joaquim  e  REGINALDO, José Salinas. Historical Echoes of Psychology Education and Challenges of the Profession in Mozambique. Psicol. cienc. prof. [online]. 2025, vol.45, n.spe1, e297696.  Epub 13-Out-2025. ISSN 1414-9893.  https://doi.org/10.1590/1982-3703003297696.

This chapter explores the development of Psychology as a science in Mozambique, tracing its evolution from political foundations to its early practices across various contexts and professional fields. It highlights the movement to establish the first education programs for psychology professionals in response to growing demands in sectors such as health and education. The 1960s—still under colonial rule—are identified as a foundational period in the history of Psychology in Mozambique, marking the arrival of expatriate professionals and the establishment of practice via strategic and bilateral cooperation with other countries. These historical recollections are based on consultations with psychologists and professionals from related fields (like teachers and nurses) who, especially during wartime, assumed responsibilities for providing primary psychological support and well-being promotion. These individuals effectively became the first psychologists through their involvement in addressing emotional crises within the broader political and social landscape. Today, the professional landscape has significantly evolved, though challenges remain in consolidating a unified professional identity capable of delivering psychological services across various sectors for the benefit of Mozambican society.
