This article refers to research that aimed, from a theoretical standpoint, to analyze how schools constitute themselves as protective factors for children in situations of social vulnerability. In pursuit of this objective, the study sought to understand the concept of social vulnerability and the idea of the school as a protective factor, identifying the possible dimensions involved in this within the school context. The methodology employed was a literature review, analyzing conceptual and contextual aspects of scientific materials related to the research theme. Data were collected and analyzed based on the following categories: education and social vulnerability; school, vulnerability, and protection. The results obtained indicate that the school, through its professionals, can offer support, protection, understanding and act in a way that promotes children`s cognitive, social and emotional development, with autonomous thinking for a better understanding of the world and their reality within this world, enhancing transformations. In this context, the issue of public policies and their greater objectives in relations to education as well as aspects involving teacher training stand out.
