Objective: This study intends to investigate the main beliefs that contribute to alcohol consumption in an alcoholic population (Clinical Group) and non-alcoholic population (Non-Clinical Group). Methods: This is a quantitative cross-sectional study with comparison groups. The sample consists of 130 male adults subjects, 70 are alcoholic dependent and 60 are non-alcoholic. In the survey It is use a sheet containing socio-demographic data; the Mini - Mental State Examination (MMSE) to check the cognitive ability, a questionnaire The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), to contrast patients risk areas about the alcohol consumption; and the Inventory of Personal Beliefs and Expectations about Alcohol (IECPA). Results: Non-Clinical Group shows 48.3% of risk alcohol use, but the Clinical Group achieve 68.8% pointing to a probable dependence related to alcohol. From the results, we observe high degree of risk for alcohol consumption in the two populations. Alcohol dependence is significantly associated with positive beliefs and expectations about the substance and the factor that most influenced the research subjects to seek drink consumption was "Decrease and/or escape of negative emotions". Conclusions: Due to a high numbers related to the use and risk of alcohol and the influence of beliefs and expectations in the substance consumption, it is necessary that health professionals explain to the population about the consequences of alcohol use, disposing of erroneous beliefs and developing healthier strategies to deal with stressful events. Besides that, health public policies could alert the population about the alcohol's harm, as well as, create prevent strategies to decrease the number of risk consumers and prevent individuals of becoming dependents
