SILVA, Caroline Campos Rodrigues da; LIMA, Tuane de Oliveira; BURMESTER, Wania Emerich  y  MALUF, Maria Regina. Fluency as a component for good reading: a study of undergraduate students. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2022, vol.42, n.103, pp.165-174.  Epub 22-Nov-2024. ISSN 1415-711X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2176-3038.20220017.

Oral reading fluency is a construct that combines three components: the precision or accuracy with which written words are captured; automaticity or reading speed, and prosody. Taken together, these aspects facilitate the construction of meaning that is demonstrated during oral reading, through ease of word recognition, appropriate rhythm, phrasing and intonation. Previous studies with adults have shown that higher fluency rates are related to better comprehension rates, suggesting that students with better fluency scores also tend to obtain better reading comprehension scores. This research aimed to explore how reading fluency is presented in a group of undergraduate students. The participants were thirty undergraduate students from psychology and pedagogy courses, aged between 18 and 57 years old, enrolled in public and private universities in São Paulo city. The results suggest that a significant number of students performed an automaticity rate lower than expected for their level of instruction, pointing to the need of teaching strategies to develop reading fluency since the early years in school, so that opportunities are offered for reading a wide variety of texts.
