In the tenth year of Prof. Dr. César Ades’ death, the present essay pays homage to this eminent scientist, predecessor of the author in chair number nineteen of the São Paulo Academy of Psychology. César Ades was a national and international reference in the field of ethology. As one of the pioneers in our country, he founded the Brazilian Society of Ethology (SBEt). He was a member of the Society for Experimental Biology and the International Council of Ethologists and signed important scientific exchanges internationally. The names of César Ades and the Institute of Psychology of the University of São Paulo (IP-USP) are closely linked. Its long, productive and respectable history took place there, dedicated to teaching and research with a high degree of social and political awareness. He was also a notable manager in the academic world, occupying many positions and, finally, the direction of the Institute of Advanced Studies at USP, which he defined as a place for the exercise of thinking.
