Orthorexia nervosa is characterized by an obsessive pursuit of healthy eating. The use of valid and reliable tools is essential to obtain epidemiological data on the prevalence of this behavior. In this study, we analyze the main tools for assessing orthorexia considering the methods used in their development and validation, as well as their contributions and limitations. The following tools were analyzed: Bratman’s Orthorexia Test (BOT), ORTO-15, Eating Habits Questionnaire (EHQ), Düsseldorfer Orthorexie Skala (DOS), Teruel Orthorexia Scale (TOS), Barcelona Orthorexia Scale (BOS), and Orthorexia Nervosa Inventory (ONI). Searches were conducted in PubMed, PsycINFO, and EMBASE databases. In order to address their contributions and limitations, studies that used these tools were selected, complementing the comparative analysis. We observed that the weaknesses in ORTO-15, BOT, and EHQ make these tools unreliable for identifying orthorexia. Therefore, their use should be discontinued. On the other hand, the use of tools such as TOS, DOS, BOS, and ONI, the last three based on orthorexia diagnostic criteria, should be encouraged.
