Abstract

CAFEZEIRO, AMANDA SALES et al. The role of religiosity/spirituality as a cultural competence in the clinical practice of the psychologist. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. [online]. 2023, vol.43, n.105, pp.155-167.  Epub Nov 04, 2024. ISSN 1415-711X.  https://doi.org/10.5935/2176-3038.20230020.

Cultural competence is a set of processes that health professionals must master in order to better serve their patients. Religious/spiritual beliefs and practices are part of cultural diversity and, in many cases, a structuring pillar of the psychological dynamics of individuals. Thus, the objective is to investigate what the literature presents about the role of religiosity/spirituality (R/S) as a cultural competence in the clinical practice of the psychologist. This is an Integrative Literature Review carried out between November and December 2021, in the PsycINFO and BVS virtual databases, using the descriptors “spirituality”, “cultural competence”, “culturally sensitive”, “psychotherapy” and “psychology and religion” combined by the Boolean operators AND and OR. From the application of the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 16 articles were selected, all in English, published between 2001 and 2019, revealing the diversity of psychotherapeutic approaches used to address religiosity/spirituality in psychological clinic, the gaps in empirical research and the need for continuing education, as well as the development by psychologists of awareness, sensitivity and ability in R/S for a performance based on respect for the patient’s beliefs and autonomy. The literature demonstrates that cultural competence in religiosity/spirituality plays a fundamental role in the clinical practice of the psychologist, making him/her able to handle this structuring dimension of people’s lives. However, important gaps in professional training and in empirical research in the field have made its use difficult.

Keywords : cultural competence; spirituality; psychotherapy.
