AFONSO, Mariana Luciano. Discovering yourself as a black woman: notes about the subjective dimension of political participation in feminist social movements. Bol. - Acad. Paul. Psicol. Racism plays a structuring role in social relations and has serious impacts on the living conditions and mental health of the black population. Efforts have been made to strengthen the anti-racist struggle within Psychology, as a science and profession. Studies point to the need to produce psychological knowledge that takes into account the subjective effects of racismo and ways to combat it. As well as the importance of deepening relationships between the academic environment and political organizations. This manuscript aims to present the life story of a black woman who is a militant of feminist social movements, to investigate the impacts of racism on her biographical trajectory. We seek to investigate especially the transformations that take place in her life and in her social relationships through the political participation in feminist social movements. The method is guided by the assumptions of qualitative research in Social Psychology. Participant observation and long-term interviews were combined, to collect life stories through memory work. By analyzing Sônia’s life story, we highlight the transformations in the understanding of ethnic-racial relations (articulated with gender and class relations) as a valuable expression of the subjective dimension of her political participation. Together with the learning made possible by the social movement and the relationships of affection and care established there, the discovery of herself as a black woman stands out. There is a strengthening of feelings of belonging and the acquisition of more resources to combat racism, sexism and class inequality. The importance of articulating the feminist struggle and the anti-racist struggle is highlighted. The power of participation in social movements committed to the anti-racist struggle as spaces for promoting mental health stands out.
