Foster care is a protective measure within the scope of social assistance, which aims to provide social support for children and adolescents in situations of threat or violation of rights. In this context, protective factors related to those in foster care should be considered as they are under foster care. This article aims to present a systematic review of the literature on the topic of hope for adolescents in the foster care system. Scientific studies indexed in the PsycINFO, Web of Science, SciELO, LILACS, PEPsic and BVS Saúde, databases, published from 2010 to 2020, were searched. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied and descriptors were used in English, Portuguese and Spanish, and so thirteen complete articles were retrieved for review. The results showed a positive association between hope and social and family support perceived by adolescents in foster care, as well as interventions that facilitate autonomy and life skills development. It was found that hope is a multifactorial construct that can act as a protective factor favoring resilience, motivation for action and perspectives for the future. The review emphasizes the importance of interventions and programs aimed at establishing well-being in institutionally fostered adolescents.
