Pregnancy loss is a common complication during pregnancy and constitutes a public health problem. Couples who experience it may face the delegitimization of their pain, considering that there is a social difficulty in recognizing this type of grief, causing emotional suffering and consequences for the family. The article aimed to understand the experience of grief resulting from pregnancy loss for couples in a University Hospital linked to the Unified Health System. This is a descriptive, exploratory, and cross-sectional study with a qualitative approach. A semi-structured script containing questions related to the couple's sociodemographic data and a guiding question were used for data collection. The ethical aspects established by the Declaration of Helsinki and Resolutions 466/2012 and 510/2016 of the National Health Council were respected. The interviews were interpreted through Bardin's Content Analysis. The results show that the experience of grief is influenced by gender issues, where women tend to express their feelings more openly, while men seek to maintain a rational stance, having difficulty coming into contact with their suffering. Paternal grief is socially invisible, as men are expected to suppress their pain in order to support their partners. We suggest the development of new research that encompasses the perspective of both genders regarding parental grief, in addition to the construction of public policies that focus on welcoming and humanizing pregnancy losses.
