This study focuses on the history of psychological assessment in Brazil and the world, showing that it is intertwined with the history of psychological testing; it notes an evolution in the course of evaluation in Brazil, therefore in the role of psychologists. It advocates the view that evaluation is not just about applying tests, while standardized tests are well used in the assessment. Knowing the assessment procedure certainly adds to the training and the professional practice, insofar as it brings more insight to such activity and thus facilitates a more integrated diagnostic understanding.
