PINHEIRO, Nadja Nara Barbosa. A helpless body: who has eyes to see and ears to listen?. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2008, vol.11, n.2, pp.3-14. ISSN 1516-0858.

The present paper proposes a reflection on a disease frequently found at hospital’s environment. It tries to respond some questions, which were brought up by a clinical case, in order to rich further theoretical understanding and a more adequate clinical handling on psychosomatic diseases. Thus, it presents Freud’s perspective about Actual Neuroses and Psychoneuroses claiming to demonstrate that it is possible that a symptom be utilized by both neuroses at the same time. Those symptoms, however, are related to different psychological movements and specific stages of emotional development. By taking Winnicott’s perspective, the paper finalizes proposing that we can understand psychosomatic diseases as a defense against the possibility of des - construction of the integration of psycho/soma which once realized would lead the patient to his original helplessness.

Palavras-chave : Psychosomatic diseases; Actual neuroses; Psychoneuroses; Psychosoma.
