OBERZINER, Ana Paula Bertoldi et al. Quality of professional life: compassion in professionals of an intensive care unit. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2024, vol.27, e003. Epub 22-Nov-2024. ISSN 1516-0858. https://doi.org/10.57167/rev-sbph.v27.534.
The work environment in an intensive care unit involves challenges and particularities that can negatively impact the mental health of hospital team professionals, such as the need to deal with expectations and fears of patients and their families in the face of a serious clinical condition, in frequent contact with death and feeling of impotence. In this study, the objective was to investigate the quality of professional life, through compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue in health care professionals that worked in an intensive care unit of a hospital in Vale do Itajaí, Santa Catarina. Sixty-two professionals answered a sociodemographic data sheet, and the Professional Quality of Life Questionnaire (ProQOL-BR), which assesses levels of Compassion Fatigue according to the factors: Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress. Sociodemographic data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and associations between variables were tested using Student’s t test, ANOVA and Pearson Correlation. It was found that only 12 participants presented the most appropriate combination for health in terms of Compassion Satisfaction, Burnout and Secondary Traumatic Stress, which may indicate an imbalance in the quality of professional life. Based on the findings, the need to invest in disease prevention and health promotion strategies in the hospital context became evident. In this sense, the importance of screening strategies for the development of psychopathologies is highlighted, especially considering the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health of health professionals.
