ANGONESE, Camile Liotto  e  MARI, Mariana Alievi. Living with cancer: perspectives of patients and families. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2024, vol.27, e009.  Epub 03-Fev-2025. ISSN 1516-0858.  https://doi.org/10.57167/rev-sbph.v27.609.

Cancer, characterized as a group of diseases in which there is uncontrolled cell multiplication, ends up mobilizing both patients and their families upon diagnosis, as the condition is surrounded by negative stigmas in common perception. Thus, this research aimed to investigate the perception of patients and their families regarding the impact of the cancer diagnosis on their lives. The study was cross-sectional, with a qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive design, and thematic analysis was used to understand the collected data. Five oncology patients and five caregivers/family members located in an oncology support center in the northern region of Rio Grande do Sul were interviewed. The study revealed that cancer has physical, social, emotional, and spiritual impacts on both patients and their families, influencing various aspects of their lives. Additionally, patients found it more challenging to verbalize their emotions, while family members were able to share their fears and anxieties regarding the patient’s illness.
