MAGALHAES, Maria Rannielly de Araújo Lima; ARRUDA, Gabriel Huet Borges de  e  MELO, Cynthia de Freitas. Breaking bad news in the neonatal context: an integrative review of the literature. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2025, vol.28, e001.  Epub 12-Maio-2025. ISSN 1516-0858.  https://doi.org/10.57167/rev-sbph.2025.v28.500.

The study aimed to investigate the national and international scientific production on the main factors that affect the communication of bad news in the neonatal context. An integrative literature review was carried out, selecting articles published in Portuguese, English and Spanish, between 2011 and 2020, in eight databases. Through the descriptors “Communication of bad news” AND “neonatal” in the three languages. Ten articles were analyzed, with the results being predominantly in the English language and with a qualitative approach. The results presented a quantitative profile of scientific production, with articles published predominantly in Portuguese and English, with quantitative research conducted with health professionals by medical researchers and published in pediatric journals. The qualitative data were organized in two categories: (1) “Parents’ experience in communicating bad news” (f=3), in which parents highlight the difficulty of receiving bad news, emphasizing the importance of empathy and humanization in this process; and (2) “The experience and training of health professionals in bad news communication” (f=8), in which professionals reflect on the difficulties in carrying out bad news communication and the need for technical training and humanization in performing this task. It is concluded that the communication of bad news is a difficult process for all involved and there is a need for investment in professional training and care during practices of communication of bad news in neonatal context.
