CAVALCANTI, Alessandra do Nascimento; PINTO, Karina Danielly Cavalcanti  e  MAIA, Eulália Maria Chaves. Cross-cultural adaptation of the patient dignity inventory in the Brazilian Northeast. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2025, vol.28, n.spe1, e002.  Epub 27-Out-2025. ISSN 1516-0858.  https://doi.org/10.57167/rev-sbph.2025.v28.esp1.886.

Patient dignity is an important element to be assessed in the quality of care provided to patients, impacting on physical, psychosocial, and existential dimensions. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt the Patient Dignity Inventory (PDI) into Brazilian Portuguese (PDI-Br) in the context of the Northeast and validate its psychometric properties in cancer patients. There were six stages in the methodological process: independent double translation, synthesis, back-translation, pre-testing with 23 participants, evaluation by a committee of experts, and a final version approved by the original author of the inventory. In the validation phase, 125 cancer patients took part, with an average age of 45.48 years (SD=9.93), and 78.40% were female. The following were evaluated: internal consistency, with a Cronbach’s alpha of 0.92; exploratory factor structure, which resulted in five factors - “Presence of Symptoms, ‘Existential Suffering’, ‘Dependence’, ‘Peace of Mind’ and ‘Social Support’ - explaining 61.32% of the variance. The results indicate that the PDI-Br is a reliable and sensitive instrument for identifying aspects linked to dignity that directly impact on the quality of life of patients in palliative care. Longitudinal studies are recommended to assess its sensitivity to clinical changes and to explore the mediation of physical symptoms in the relationship between dignity and well-being.
