ALBARACIN, Gabriela Cattel et al. Review of the Psychological Care Protocol in a High-Complexity Neonatal Unit. Rev. SBPH [online]. 2025, vol.28, n.spe1, e006.  Epub 21-Nov-2025. ISSN 1516-0858.  https://doi.org/10.57167/rev-sbph.2025.v28.esp_1.898.

The hospitalization of a newborn in Neonatal Units (NUs) is a critical event that may lead to psychological suffering, helplessness, anxiety, and increased risk for common mental disorders in mothers. Hospital Psychology plays a central role in welcoming and managing such experiences, providing emotional support, and promoting parent-infant bonding. However, psychological interventions in NUs still face challenges such as high patient volume, short hospitalization periods, and the complexity of interacting with the multidisciplinary team. This study describes the process of implementing new psychological care strategies for mothers of newborns admitted to the NUs of a high-complexity public hospital and National Reference Center for maternal and neonatal health. Based on systematic observations, the restructured protocol aimed to broaden access and enhance the quality of care. Strategies included the development of flowcharts to identify priority demands, diversification of intervention modalities (individual, family, parent groups, sibling visits, and therapeutic circles with manual activities), and the integration of the Psychology Team into the daily handover routines of the NU. As a result, improvements were observed in the identification of psychosocial risk factors, the quality of psychological care, and the engagement of mothers with the Psychology Team. Additionally, communication between the Psychology and the multidisciplinary team was strengthened. The participation of psychologists in daily handovers contributed to a more holistic understanding of patient and family needs and enabled timely, contextualized interventions. The expanded strategies showed potential to optimize psychological support and increase its availability, while also fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and promoting the humanization of care.
