Depression is highly incident and recurrent, with episodes of different levels of severity being more frequent among women. Maternal depression is known for its impact on parenting and schoolchildren’s behavior. However, the influence of depression severity has been less systematically addressed. Therefore, the objective was to analyze recent empirical studies that address the impact of the severity of maternal depression on parenting and schoolchildren’s behavior. Empirical articles published between 2016-2022 were searched using PRISMA guidelines and the keywords: “maternal depress*; parenting; behavior problem.” A total of 737 studies were found in PsychINFO, PubMed, Web of Science, Lilacs, and Scielo databases, ten of which were selected for analysis. Another two studies found in the bibliographic references of the articles identified were included; hence, 12 studies were included in the final analysis. Regarding the studies’ designs, most adopted a cross-sectional design and performed prediction analyses. Depression at different levels of severity was associated with fewer positive practices and behavior problems among students; however, the chronic nature of current depression was found to explain the negative impact on parental practices better. Such findings can guide health professionals assisting children with problem behavior, providing guidelines that consider the mothers’ mental health condition. Further studies are suggested to address the impact of different levels of severity of maternal depression on parenting and schoolchildren’s behavior.
