Abstract

MAGRO, Márcia Luíza Pit Dal  and  GIACOBONE, Roberta Vial. Suffering and illness in precarious work and their relationship with Disavowal (Verleugnung). Cad. psicol. soc. trab. [online]. 2024, vol.27, e197642.  Epub Mar 21, 2025. ISSN 1516-3717.  https://doi.org/10.11606/issn.1981-0490.cpst.2024.197642.

This work aimed to understand how disavowal (Verleugnung) operates in the process of producing suffering and illness at work, based on the analysis of a precarious work context. This refers to the slaughtering and meat processing industries, a sector widely recognized in scientific literature for the process of labor exploitation and illness of its workers. The method used was qualitative research, with semi-structured interviews carried out with 18 industrial workers. The analyzes were carried out based on Grounded Theory. It is understood that in the work context in which the workers participating in the study were inserted, suffering and illness went through a process of disavowal that involved different people with different roles, such as managers, colleagues, health professionals, the sick workers themselves and their family members, as well as organizations and institutions, taking on a traumatic dimension. It is concluded that disavowal permeates the ways of work and the new modalities of social ties in neoliberal capitalism.

Keywords : Disavowal; Trauma; Precariousness of work; Worker’s health.
